| Video, Building A Better Bear Fence |
1 |
|
Join our own Edd Buchanan and many familiar Club faces as they erect a solar electric fence to deflect bears, deer, and teenagers at the 4H bee hives in Swannanoa. They use a 4 volt panel from Tractor Supply, a DC Charger, metal posts with insulators, grounding rod, and gate latches and hook it all up with a mess of wire! Emphasized are looping the strands together so they'll stay hot if one gets broken, and not placing the collector in shade. Total cost, excluding the invaluable donated labor, was under $200, in 2003. |

| Video, Candle Making For Everyone |
1 |
|
Well, maybe not for everyone Did YOU know REAL beeswax foundation, rolled into a taper, is susceptible to bloom? That it is brittle, and hard to roll? That it doesn't really burn well? We discover as Steve Forest talks with Brenda Anders the brightly colored beeswax candles she makes from materials purchased from A.I. Root are actually paraffin! She makes a pretty good profit, though, and the candles stay nice and burn right! Don't use yellow sheets, though. It's 1992, and from Root products. Steve takes us to an exclusive interview with candle guru Dr. Bob Burkholtz, who shares his beeswax processing secrets. (Bob DOES use real beeswax) You may want to view this tape before risking your kitchen. Want dripless candles? Want to know the real secret to clean filtering? How do you decide wick size? Did you know polyester in cotton wicking will make a candle go out? Ever want to see how they make those famous Moravian candles? Well, check this out! |
| Video, Controlling Honey Bee Emergencies |
1 |
|
This rather sensationalistic videotape was produced by the A.I. Root Co. in 1992 to help local fire departments cope with the looming threat of threatening swarms, abandoned hives, and accidents involving bee--hauling trucks. The gist is, whenever a threat to humans is perceived, local firemen must not hesitate to apply soapy water killing the bees within 60 seconds and controlling the threat. Mission Accomplished!! The threats in this video are simulated, but the actual apicide is not. Sensitive viewer discretion is advised |
| Video, Finding And Treating Bee Diseases |

|
Nosema, American Foul Brood, European Foul Brood, Chalk Brood, Bee Paralysis, and Sack Brood have been around for a long time, and their symptoms and treatment have not changed since this 1992 video was made. Steve Forest. |
| Video, Free Bees For You |
1 |
|
Yeah, Buddy! Join Steve Forest in the woods as he and the brothers Bennet track feral bees to a hollow in a tree. These boys have kept bees all their lives, and they're no spring chickens so they know what they're doing! With only the overalls on their backs (the 4 brothers keep asking Steve if he's got enough veil) they fell, cut up, and tear apart the bee tree. Then they hand tie chunks of comb into empty frames! This one's a hoot, and there's interesting lore about the bee traps and means of determining how far away a hive may be. The Bennet brothers like to start from a water source, when it's been hot and dry. 1992. Then, there's a kind of epilog with a very sharp beekeeper named Avery Duncan, who reveals some ingenious methods and devices for removing colonies from less malleable sites like the walls of buildings. |

|
The manufacturer of EpiPen, the epinephrine auto--injector, provide this instructive tape to give a working understanding how to use their product in the event of the onset of anaphylactic shock. It just might save your life! (Provided you have an EpiPen) Actually, it should work on allergic reactions to other stuff (besides bee stings), too. P.$. Check those expiration date$!! |

| Video, Tales From The Hive |
1 |
|
If you haven't seen this, you won't believe it! If you have, you'll want to watch it again. The camera work performs unbelievable magic in presenting bee's eye views including the in--air mating of a queen! Fascinating, rambling discussion takes a roller--coaster ride in and out of the hive. Produced for NOVA. |
| Video, The Monk And The Honey Bee |
1 |
|
This entertaining film takes us to Buckfast Abbey, in Southwest England, where we are introduced to the life and work of world--famous bee--breeder, Brother Adam, and his lifetime work the hybrid Buckfast' Bee. Nearly 90 at the time of filming (1988?), Brother Adam still manages to mount an expedition to Kenya, pursuing his never ending quest for superior genes in breeding queens. There are historical asides detailing Brother Adam's earlier expeditions and his solving of Mendel's failure to predict honey bee genetic traits. There are interviews with adoring disciples and encounters with true Africanized bees. Truly worth watching! |
| Video, Tracheal Mite: Detection/Prevention/Cure |
1 |
|
A 30 40% loss of bee colonies during the Winter of '90 '91 (despite the presence of pollen stores and honey) was attributed to tracheal mites, and Steve Forest interviews Dr. John Ambrose about the problem. Dr Ambrose points out, a colony can apparently be strong going into the winter, and be killed by tracheal mites as easily as a small colony. They visit the lab for a demonstration of bee thorax dissecting, preparatory to a potassium hydroxide soak the only way to be sure of tracheal mite infestation is by microscope. But they discuss behavior suggestive of the presence of mites undulating masses clinging to the outside of the hive, and bees struggling on the ground unable to fly. Dr Shimanuki discusses the similarity of mite destruction (Did you know there are 4 Federal Bee Labs?) to the mysterious Isle of Wight Disease which wiped out the English black honey bee in the 1920s. Mr. Weaver of Navasota Tex touts 'Buckfast' bees (he sells) as being resistant. Dr. Ambrose discusses treatments with Menthol, Amitraz, and grease patties. |
| Video, Ulee's Gold |
1 |
|
OK, this one has a plot. And it's not actually ABOUT bees but it does feature a beekeeper (Peter Fonda) who keeps commercial hives in North Florida, producing Tupelo honey. The backdrop should be enough but it's also a pretty good movie. Rated R some implied sex, explicit language, and a tad of violence. |
