RE: after a swarm

Karen, if after two weeks you still do not have a laying queen consider adding a drawn queen cell back into this hive, then give it another two weeks. I have placed a new store bought queen in what I thought was a queenless hive after two weeks to find the hive queen came home and killed my store queen. That is why i suggest a queen cell. if the hive queen comes back mated, your only out an unmated queen. and no money.. If she is not in there then the queen cell will take up her post.. good luck.

after a swarm

I am trying to calculate how long after a swarm one should see evidence of the new queen in the *hive which was left behind*. It has been 11 days now and there are no new eggs, a ton of busy bees bringing in pollen and nectar, and perhaps a thousand capped brood left, a ton of honey, mostly uncapped but beginning to be capped.
Any advice will be appreciated,

Need to photograph PACKAGE Install

Hi beekeepers,

I need to photograph the installation of a package of bees for the Popular Farming Series: Beekeeping edition magazine, and would love to do it locally. I live in Candler, but I'm willing to drive most places in WNC to photograph your install (I work in Old Fort). You can be featured in the magazine if you'd like, OR, I will crop out your face(s) and keep you anonymous. You won't have to do anything, and as a beekeeper myself, I'll be protected in my own gear, you won't be liable for any stings that should occur, and I will be quiet and quick in my photography.

No payment available - just bragging rights!

If anyone is interested, please respond to this thread - if not, or if you're not getting your bees through the mail, please don't hesitate to pass along this message. Your help is much appreciated!

Thank you!

night feeding question

I caught a swarm on Thursday evening. I put them in a nuc with five frames of foundation. The nuc is about 2 feet from my strong hives in the bee yard.
Q1: should I feed the swarm in the nuc?
Last time I fed a nuc (in the dearth last year) I thought everything was fine until I realized that the activity was robber bees going in and out. This nuc bit the dust.
Q2: so I am thinking about feeding the swarm at night only, and removing the jar each morning.
We are having quiet the honey and pollen flow right now, so maybe the strong bees will not mess with the nuc, anyway.
Is this a good idea to feed at night only until they get a good start?
Thanks,
Karen

RE: bees in trees

The best answer I have to your question about keeping the bees or charge for recovering them is yes, I have done both. I am an active member of the WNC bee club and support the growth of the number of bee keepers we have. So I have given swarms to new bee keepers who are just starting out.. I have also kept swarms to increase my failing number of hives. "Excess is the mother of generosity", and right now my hives are doing well. I may request a donation to help support our club and new members. But mostly I would like to offer a way to catch those swarms that are too high to safely gather yourself and give them a home that is not in the wild. And if you have ever put up a swarm, you know how much of a thrill it is. That is often payment enough.
