Africanized Honey Bees getting farther North
02/07/10 6:45 PM

In one of the Q&A sessions at the advanced Bee School (Thank you all who were involved) Edd Buchanan mentioned that the AHB was getting closer and closer to NC.

One of the voluntary guidelines that Florida Dept of Ag suggests for its beekeepers is to : 12. Maintain one European drone source colony (250 square inches of drone comb) for every 10 colonies in order to reduce supercedure queens mating with AHB drones.

Perhaps this is what we North Carolina Beekeepers could do to help stop the influx?

We only have 3 colonies but would be interested in learning how to set up a drone source colony.
(is it any different than just having a colony? I know you can buy drone sized foundation.)

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
